It is the heart of the city’s Maltese community, with the only Bank of Valletta branch in Oceania on Watt Street, and it has been home to a thriving Vietnamese community since the refugee arrivals of the late 1970s, whose groceries and restaurants line the town centre. More recent African and Burmese families have added new colour to a suburb that has always welcomed newcomers. Life here gathers around the Sunshine Plaza and Marketplace, the heritage H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens on Anderson Road, and quiet places of worship such as the Hue Quang Temple.
