Werribee sits in Melbourne’s south-west, the busy administrative heart of the City of Wyndham and one of its oldest settlements, founded as an agricultural town in the 1850s on the open plains the Chirnside family once farmed. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word for backbone, after the river that winds through it. Today Werribee is a large and growing community known for Werribee Park and the Chirnside mansion, the Victoria State Rose Garden, the Open Range Zoo and the green corridor of the Werribee River, with families gathering along the riverside parklands and the main street.

Many local families lay their loved ones to rest at the historic Werribee Cemetery, established in the 1860s and known for its rose gardens, gum-tree avenue and the much-loved old Bunya-Bunya pine.
